G189 Mine Site Supervisor (Formerly S123)
Course Overview
The G189 Mine Site Supervisor course is designed for current and aspiring supervisors working within Queensland's coal and metalliferous mining industries. This nationally recognised program provides participants with the knowledge and practical skills required to effectively supervise work teams, manage workplace risks, investigate incidents, and communicate safety information in accordance with legislative and site requirements.
Successful completion of this course satisfies the competency requirements for statutory supervisors and Site Safety and Health Representatives (SSHRs) under the Queensland mining legislation. The qualification is recognised by the Queensland Coal Mining Safety and Health Advisory Committee and the Mining Safety and Health Advisory Committee.
Units of Competency
Participants will complete the following nationally recognised units:
- RIIRIS301E – Apply Risk Management Processes
- RIIWHS301E – Conduct Safety and Health Investigations
- RIICOM301E – Communicate Information
Course Outcomes
On successful completion participants will be able to:
- Apply legislative and site safety requirements.
- Identify workplace hazards and conduct risk assessments.
- Implement and review effective risk controls.
- Participate in and lead workplace incident investigations.
- Gather and analyse evidence following workplace incidents.
- Prepare clear investigation reports and recommend corrective actions.
- Communicate effectively with workers, contractors and management.
- Conduct toolbox talks, pre-start meetings and safety briefings.
- Contribute to a positive safety culture and effective supervision.

Prerequisites
There are no formal training package prerequisites for these units of competency. However, participants should:
- Have experience working within the resources industry.
- Possess sound literacy and communication skills.
- Be employed in, or have access to, a mining workplace where workplace evidence can be gathered if required by the assessment method.
- Hold a current mine induction where required by the employer or site (for example, Standard 11 for Queensland coal operations).

Refresher Requirements
Queensland legislation requires supervisors to maintain currency. Refresher training is generally recommended every five years in accordance with the Coal Mining Safety and Health Regulation and industry advisory committee requirements.
